Crime Numbers
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) collates crime data for all the counties in the state and publishes annual reports of their crime statistics. Its latest report indicates that Spartanburg County recorded 16 murders, 65 sexual batteries, 83 robberies, and 878 aggravated assaults in 2019. Law enforcement agencies also recorded 1,357 cases of burglary, 3,487 larcenies, 576 motor vehicle thefts, and 28 arsons.
Compared to the county’s 2013 crime data, murder (350%), aggravated assault (40.7%), and motor vehicle theft (53.5%) rates were higher in 2017. The county’s five-year crime trend also reveals falling sexual battery (19.7%), robbery (19.6%), burglary (13.6%), and larceny (4.4%) rates.
Spartanburg County Criminal Records
The SLED also provides criminal background checks for the counties of South Carolina. It offers name-based background checks and allows citizens to search its database online and submit mail requests for criminal history records. To search online, visit the SLED CATCH webpage to conduct a search as well as view and print its result. The fee for this service is $25 plus a $1 convenience fee. The SLED accepts credit/debit cards for payment. For qualifying organizations, like charities, SLED charges $8 while offering its background check service free of charge for school districts requesting criminal history records of their teachers.

The SLED accepts money orders as well as business, certified, and cashier’s checks for payment. The fee for each mail request for a criminal history record is $25.

There are other law enforcement agencies in Spartanburg County including the Spartanburg Police Department. Each of these produce their own incident and accident reports. Copies of offense and accident reports are free for individuals involved in the incidents described. For others, the Spartanburg Police Department charges $3 per report.
Spartanburg County Sex Offender Information
The Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office provides a search tool to help residents find registered sex offenders living and working in the county. Use the Sheriff’s Offender Search tool to search for sex offenders by name, email address, and phone number. Restrict the search to specific neighborhoods by searching with street addresses and zip codes in the county.

The Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office runs these facilities through its Detention Services Division. To reach this Division, call (864) 596-2607. The Sheriff’s Office publishes a regularly updated Jail Roster to help citizens find individuals incarcerated in these facilities. A Spartanburg County Inmate Search requires the inmates full name, birth date and DOC number.
Friends and family can send money to inmates in the Detention Center by sending money orders through the U.S. Postal Service to the Main Jail address above. They can also fund inmates’ accounts by making cash and credit/debit card deposits at the kiosk located in the lobby of the Main Jail. This location is available 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. Note that a $3 transaction fee is deducted from each kiosk transaction and money order sent.
Spartanburg County Court Records
The highest trial court in Spartanburg County is the Circuit Court. The Clerk of Court maintains the records of the Circuit Court and the Family Court. Vital Records
The Spartanburg County Clerk of Court maintains divorce records along with other court records. Contact the Clerk’s Office at the address and phone number listed above to enquire about obtaining copies of a divorce decree/judgement.
The Vital Records and Data Statistics office of the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) issues certified copies of divorce reports. Only the parties involved in a divorce, their adult children, their current and former spouses, and their legal representatives can obtain this divorce record.
Download, print, and complete a DHEC Vital Records Marriage/Divorce Application (also in Spanish). Bring this, along with the required copy fees and a valid photo ID issued by the government, a school, or an employer, to the DHEC State Vital Records Office, Columbia located at:

This office is open to the public during weekdays between 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. DHEC charges a non-refundable $12 search fee that includes a certified copy of divorce report. Each additional copy of the same report costs $3. Cash and credit/debit cards are accepted for payment for walk-in requests.

Follow the same procedures to apply for certified copies of birth, death, and marriage certificates from the DHEC State Vital Records Office. Submit a DHEC Vital Records Marriage/Divorce Application ( Spanish) to request for copies of a marriage certificate and use Vital Records Birth Application (Spanish) and Vital Records Death Application (Spanish) for the other vital records.
Fees and payment methods for birth, death, and marriage certificates are the same as for divorce reports.
